Before TV was invented families sat down in the livingroom and listened to their favorite radio personality and show, usually on Saturday nite. "Grand Old Oprey", "The Shadow", "The Jack Benny Program", "Disk Tracy", "The War Of The Worlds", and many other favorites.
It was a time to use your imagination and follow your favorite weekly. Music programs were especially popular. Hearing the crooning of Frank Sinatra, and listening to your favorite orchestra, passed the time on Saturday nite.
The Radios in the display case at the museum are from the 1940's up to the 1980's. The progression of radios to small portable transistors shows how the dynamics have changed over the years. Some radios were quite large while, as technology progressed, the mdels were tapered and streamlined for portable use. With the populatiry of music in the 1960's, radio stations published weekly lists of the top 20 songs. Several of these lists are included in our display. Here is a sample.
