This structure once stood behind the Dundee Road home that Katarina Sicks built in 1892. There was a team of horses on one side and buggies on the other with hay in the loft. We are indeed indebted to John F. Sicks, Katarina's Grandson, for information on the building. His father George Sicks, was the Mayor of Wheeling, Board member and Wheeing's Justice of the Peace.
The house was remodeled to make a two-flat around 1929 and it was then that the Carriage House became a three car garage. The loft was reached by a ladder formed by nailing slats to studs of the back wall. The stairway was added much later.
Today, it houses the pole from the old fire house, in addition to a carriage and sleigh and some early farm implements and tools donated by the farmers and residents of Wheeling.
Restoration has brought the front of the building close to the original but later hardwood floors replaced the floors which were once rough, wide planks. The loft now acts as a storage area for various items when not in use.
